US unwilling to give Pak N-power plants

from SHAIQ HUSSAIN
ISLAMABAD - The USA is not willing to provide nuclear power plants to Pakistan despite intense diplomatic efforts by Islamabad in this regard to meet its ever-growing energy requirements.
For the last couple of months, Pakistan has been striving to acquire nuclear power plants from the United States, which it believes are vital to meet its dire energy requirements in the coming years.
However, according to diplomatic sources, the Bush administration is not willing to accede to Pakistans request regarding the extension of nuclear plants for peaceful purposes.
Pakistan asked the Bush administration for the provision of at least two nuclear power plants for civilian purposes, the sources said and added that the demand was made to meet countrys energy requirements through power generation up till 2010.
The US decision to clinch agreement with India on nuclear energy cooperation and its refusal to provide nuclear power plants to Pakistan would not have a positive impact on the relations between Islamabad and Washington, a source said.
He said the telephone call by the US Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice to President Musharraf soon after the Indo-US nuclear energy cooperation agreement was an effort to allay Pakistans concerns about the pact.
